Japanese Pizza - Okonomiyaki, Must try in Osaka

What is Okonomiyaki?

O-konomi-yaki is a Japanese savory pizza or pancake with a variety of ingredients inside. The name is derived from the word okonomi, meaning "how you like" or "what you like", and yaki meaning "grill". The ingredients vary but may include: green onion, meat (generally thin pork belly, often mistaken for bacon), octopus, squid, shrimp, vegetables, etc.

Many restaurants serve Okonomiyaki on Teppan (hot steal plate) in front of you that you can enjoy hot Okonomiyaki all the time. Takoyaki (a.k.a octopus ball) is family of Okonomiyaki, special local product in Osaka, located in central part of Japan.

Where do you try Okonomiyaki?

Best place you would try is Osaka. Simple reason is that Okonomiyaki is originally from Osaka that the taste is far different from that in other cities. I don't recommend you to try Okonomiyaki chains, but small restaurants although there's a bit language barrier you would face.

Among the ten types of Negi-yaki, we recommend the "Suji Negi-yaki" (1210 yen). Suji means beef shank, it's so soft and jelly-like texture, sweat and savory after being stewed with sweat soy sauce.
